Israel score late-winner against Belarus to further Euro cause

Israel has experience when it comes to last-minute goals or narrow misses.

Many fans are still recalling the last match in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, when Israel conceded a late goal against Austria, which would cause them to miss out on a place in the play-offs.

More than 20 years later, something has changed in the Israeli national teams.

It began in the U20 World Cup.

In the last group stage match against Japan, Israel scored a winning goal in the 92nd minute.

In the round of 16 against Uzbekistan, Israel scored another late winning goal, this time in the 97th minute.

A few weeks later, the U21 national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the Euros with a winning goal in the 82nd minute.

During this marvelous sequence, there was another dramatic win in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, an away match against Belarus.

Israel struggled back from behind and equalised in the 85th minute with a penalty from Shon Weissman.

Oscar Gloukh went on to score a magnificent goal in the 93rd minute.

Israel hosted Belarus once again at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.

For the Israelis, it was a chance for a much-needed win after an away draw against Romania.

Belarus is having a disastrous campaign, and in their last match, they drew against Andorra.

Just like in the first match between the teams, Israel were dominant but failed to find the net.

Once again, however, Israel grabbed a winner - Gabi Kanichowsky with a 93rd minute strike to make it 1-0.

Some will say it was luck, some will say it was just a coincidence, but there is no doubt that something is changing in Israeli football.

Kanichowsky is not one of the youngsters that has played in those youth teams, but he is playing alongside some of the key players from those campaigns.

Maybe there is a new mentality and spirit in Israel and, if so, the team looks closer than ever to qualifying for its first Euros.
