Asian Cup and Afcon roundup: Palestine lose to Iran and Egypt draw as tournaments get underway

The Palestine national team started their 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign in Qatar on Sunday.

Heading in to the game, the team were anticipating a grand opening with local crowd support - almost experiencing home team advantage.

The match occurred during a time of symbolic significance, with the ongoing war in Gaza, and its impact spreading across the wider region.

Despite the pre-match atmosphere, an early setback occurred, as midfielder Ataa Jaber sustained an injury that has sidelined him from the squad.

Coach Makram Daboub's perplexing decision to exclude Oday Dabbagh from the lineup has also raised questions about the Palestinians' approach ahead of the match.

Zeid Qunbar, himself a player with a complex backstory, started the game.

A player like Qunbar, who has previously excelled in the youth system of Israeli side Beitar Jerusalem, and later for Jordanian giants Al Wehdat, Qunbar - starting for Palestine against Iran - themselves led by Porto’s Mehdi Taremi - in Qatar, represents how much this tournament can turn the football pitch into a brief historical canvas of the region.

The Iranians took the lead through Karim Ansarifad in less than a minute.

By the 12th minute it was 2-0, with Shoja Khalilzadeh scoring from close range.

Palestine looked unprepared and seemed unable to distance themselves mentally from the situation back home. In the 38th minute, Mehdi Ghaedi burst through to make it 3-0 to the Iranians.

Deep into added time, Tamer Seyam struck from close range, leading the teams into halftime with Team Melli leading 3-1.

In the second half, the Iranians made a double substitution, and Sardar Azmon, who came on, scored.

While the Palestinians improved, playing more aggressively, the gulf in quality between the two teams remained evident - the game ended 4-1.

After securing qualification for their third consecutive Asian Cup, the Palestinians were aspiring to advance further this time, considering the circumstances back home.

But after this display against Iran, they will need two outstanding performances - against the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong - to secure second or third place.

Other results so far include Japan beating Vietnam 4-2, and the UAE team beating Hong Kong 3-1.

Today's matches include South Korea vs Bahrain, Indonesia vs Iraq, and Malaysia vs Jordan.

Afcon 2023: Day two is full of surprises

In the Africa Cup of Nations, there were many surprises in Ivory Coast yesterday. Nigeria struggled against Equatorial Guinea, settling for a 1-1 draw - thanks to a Victor Osimhen goal.

Egypt conceded two goals in a group stage game for the first time since 2008, falling behind against Mozambique. They eventually levelled the score at 2-2, taking advantage of a Mo Salah penalty in extra time.

The day concluded with a surprising 2-1 victory for Cape Verde over Ghana.

And there’s more to come today, as matches include Senegal vs Gambia, Cameroon vs Guinea, and Algeria vs Angola.
