AFCON 2021 predictions: Senegal and Morocco should dominate opponents

The Africa Cup of Nations has struck with sad news from Yaoundé on Monday night, when reportedly eight fans lost their lives as a result of a stampede outside of the Olembe Stadium.

Around 40 more are reported injured, as the incident shadowed the host country’s victory over Comoros.

The round of 16 continues today with two matches: Senegal face Cape Verde, and Morocco take on Malawi.

Senegal v Cape Verde, 17:00 CET, Kouekong Stadium, Baffousam

Senegal were ice cold in the group stage, scoring just one goal - and that was from a penalty. Somehow, in the midst of a barrage of 1-0 and 0-0 results at the start of the tournament, the Teranga Lions finished top of their group.

Cape Verde were combative enough to qualify from Group A with Cameroon. And they’ve shown they can score too, Garry Rodrigues’ goal in their 1-1 draw with the hosts was one of the most beautiful so far this tournament.

BabaGol’s prediction: It’s now or never for Aliou Cissé and his players. No room for errors, or maybes. They need to qualify,  but only if they can put their dismal group stage performance behind them. Senegal to win.

Morocco v Malawi, 20:00 CET, Stade Ahmadou Ahidjou, Yaoundé

Morocco are one of the strongest sides in Africa, but they come up against a Malawi side which is one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

Morocco are getting criticism from fans back home for their style of play, yet results are still on the Atlas Lions’ side. Malawi have a fast and physical style of play; it won’t be an easy game for either team.

BabaGol’s prediction: Morocco to win.
