AFCON 2021 predictions: Nigeria and Tunisia fight for quarterfinal spot

It has been a busy week for African football.

After the playoff draw earlier this weekend for the CAF qualifiers for this year's World Cup showed us the potential path to the finals, the AFCON knockout stage kicks off today. It took a while for the tournament to gear up, but boy are we ready for some serious battles.

Sunday will host two matches that will determine who will guarantee their spot in the quarterfinals.

Burkina Faso v Gabon, 17:00 CET, Limbe Stadium, Limbe

A fight between two west African sides, who showed a lot of talent and quality in the group stage. Burkina Faso, with Gustavo Sangaré, can pose a threat to any team left in the competition.

Gabon on the other hand, are the masters of chaos. Covid-19, scandals, and a dressing room devoid of morale is nothing for Aaron Boupendza and his crew, with Gabon surprising many against Ghana and Morocco.

BabaGol’s prediction: Burkina Faso are more noble, but Gabon are a wounded animal that is fighting against its demons. Gabon will win in extra time/penalties.

Nigeria v Tunisia, 20:00 CET, Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adija, Garoua

This clash has the potential to become an AFCON classic. The Super Eagles are the best team in the tournament, have won all their games, and looked fantastic. They are surely the favourites to go all the way here.

Tunisia on the other hand are an enigma. They lost due to a refereeing scandal, won convincingly 4-0,  and lost the last match to Gambia. Monther Kbeair’s side is unpredictable, but have the tools to make Nigeria’s life difficult.

BabaGol’s prediction: No matter how hard they try, Nigeria are on a mission here in Cameroon. Nigeria to win.
