Algeria and South Africa Seal Spots for CHAN 2024

The final two places for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 have been confirmed, as Algeria and South Africa sealed qualification over the weekend to complete the 19-team field for the prestigious tournament.

Algeria booked their ticket in emphatic style, dispatching The Gambia 3-0 on Friday in a commanding performance that secured a 3-0 aggregate victory. South Africa followed suit with a comeback win on Sunday, overturning a first-leg deficit against Malawi to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Both teams will now feature in Group C, joining Uganda, Niger, and Guinea in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most competitive pools.

The qualification round’s conclusion marks a major milestone on the road to CHAN 2024, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from 2 to 30 August 2025. The tournament is returning to East Africa for the first time since it was held in Rwanda in 2016, and excitement is already building for what many expect to be a showcase of the continent’s finest home-based talent.

The CHAN, a biennial competition organized by CAF exclusively for players active in domestic leagues, offers a rare stage for lesser-known stars to shine. Reigning champions Senegal will be aiming to defend their title after a dramatic victory over Algeria in the 2022 final in Algiers, while special attention will be on the three host nations, eager to perform in front of home crowds.
