Controversy and VAR Decisions in JDT's AFC Champions League Exit

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) dreamed about travelling to Saudi Arabia and play the AFC Champions League Elite quarterfianls, but reality had different plans for Malaysia’s finest club.

While their first leg against Buriram United at Chang Arena in Thailand ended in a goalless draw, the decisive second leg took place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Malaysia.

Buriram United secured a 1-0 victory, with Suphanat Mueanta scoring the only goal of the match. This result allowed Buriram United to advance to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 aggregate score.

The match was marred by controversy surrounding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). JDT had two goals disallowed after VAR reviews, including a stoppage-time goal by Jorge Obregón, which was ruled offside under contentious circumstances.

These decisions have sparked debate, especially since replays suggested that Obregón's goal was legitimate and could have forced the match into extra time.

Despite their recent success in the Malaysian Super League, JDT's journey in the AFC Champions League concluded earlier than anticipated due to this narrow defeat.
