Graham Arnold Named Iraq Coach for Final World Cup Qualifiers

BAGHDAD — Former Australia manager Graham Arnold has been appointed head coach of Iraq’s national team for the final two matches of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Arnold, 61, replaces Jesús Casas, who was dismissed after Iraq’s 2-1 loss to Palestine in March. The Lions of Mesopotamia currently sit third in Group B, one point behind second-placed Jordan and four behind South Korea. Only the top two teams will qualify automatically for the World Cup.

The veteran coach is set to lead Iraq in two high-stakes matches: a home clash against South Korea in Basra on June 5, followed by a decisive away fixture against Jordan on June 10.

“I haven’t come here to not be successful. We can do it,” Arnold said during his unveiling in Baghdad. He will be supported by a familiar backroom team including Rene Meulensteen, Rob Stanton, and Zeljko Kalac.

Iraq are aiming to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. Arnold’s arrival brings renewed hope that a dramatic late push can take them to North America in 2026.
