Ligat Ha'al hasn't seen such a close championship race in years.
With just four games remaining, the main event at Bloomfield Stadium featured a crucial head-to-head match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Be'er Sheva. Before kickoff, both teams were tied on points at the top of the table.
The hosts, Maccabi Tel Aviv, entered the match in good form. Last week, they defeated Hapoel Haifa to close in on first place. Earlier this season, Maccabi Tel Aviv had already claimed the top position after defeating Hapoel Be'er Sheva in their previous encounter.
Meanwhile, Hapoel Be'er Sheva was coming off a disappointing performance. They lost against Maccabi Netanya last week, conceding the decisive goal in the 100th minute. Despite this setback, Hapoel Be'er Sheva still aims for the double this season, with a cup final against Beitar Jerusalem scheduled for late May.
FIRST HALF
In the early stages of the first half, Hapoel Be'er Sheva controlled possession, though Maccabi Tel Aviv's high pressure proved challenging. In the 12th minute, Hapoel Be'er Sheva launched an effective attack when Dan Biton drove forward with the ball, beat his defender, and scored. Biton, a Be'er Sheva homegrown player who returned last summer after three years with Maccabi Tel Aviv, put his team ahead 1-0.
Maccabi Tel Aviv continued to press forward in search of an equalizer. In the 33rd minute, Dor Peretz played a pass down the left wing to Wesley Patati. The 21-year-old Brazilian attempted a shot from a difficult angle. Niv Eliasi, Be'er Sheva's goalkeeper, failed to save it, and the score is level again, 1-1.
SECOND HALF
The second half grew increasingly tense for both sides. Though each team created several chances, the pressure proved decisive as neither could find the net again. The managers, Zarko Lazetic and Ran Kojuch, failed to make an impact with their substitutions, reacting too late and unable to create the changes their teams needed.
With three matches remaining for both teams, each will need to find that decisive championship moment to secure the title.
