Yerson Chacón: The Next Diamond from Venezuela?

Another hidden gem from Venezuelan football.

Juan Gafas presented us players from Venezuela in the past like Jovanny Bolívar, and now it’s the time to meet a new youngster you should all know.

Yerson Chacón

Age: 18

Club: Deportivo Táchira (Venezuela).

Position: Winger, Attacking Midfielder.

Nationality: Venezuelan.

Market Value: €250,000 (Transfermarkt).

At 18 years old, Chacón is one of several upcoming young talents from the Venezuelan league, and has played an important role in Táchira’s good form since he started playing regularly last season.

He has good technical skills and positional awareness, shown whenever he receives the ball in tight spaces, and surprisingly good decision making for his age. Chacón usually plays as a winger, adopting a different style on each side of the pitch. On the left he tends to cut inside, looking for an opportunity to take a shot on goal, on the right he’ll stay wide before delivering a cross into the box. He has the ability to do both at a good level, and he does well when receiving between the lines too.

Physically, he is around 5ft 5in tall and pace is not one of his strongest attributes, but he does have quick feet and can win a yard or two before a pass or an attempt on goal. Whilst lacking in strength, he contributes out of possession by pressing aggressively, getting tight with opponents on the ball.

It’s difficult to assess how far Chacón’s career can go. He has a good skill set and character, as far as I can see from watching him on video, but lacks in most physical aspects. With the right guidance and suitable conditions, I believe he could do well at a higher level than the one he currently plays at.
