Coronavirus Times: Jalapa's Headers Secured Another Top Division Season

After a drama in the Liga Nacional de Nicaragua, ART Jalapa won the relegation playoffs and will play one more season in the top tier.

Jalapa and Deportivo Masaya played the second leg after the second-tier side won 2-1 in the first leg.

Jalapa wanted to make a comeback in front of their home crowd. Deportivo were 90 minutes away from celebrating their return to the Liga Nacional and all they had to do is keep their lead from the first leg.

The local team didn't give their opponents any feeling that they are any closer to promotion. In the 19th minute, a free kick from the right side was crossed directly to the head of Marcos García, who scored the first goal. Eight minutes later, a corner kick, once again from the right, found one of Jalapa's players head and Gersan Ramos was in the right spot to push the ball in.

With a 2-0 lead, ART Jalapa could feel comfortable, but it was not enough yet. In the 60th minute, Carlos Guevara from Masaya attempted a shot from a long distance. The ball deflected from one of the defenders to the post and into the net. Deportivo had to score one more goal in order to take the advantage back. In the 87th minute, as extra time was getting closer, the guests made the same mistake once again. A corner from the right was curved to the head of Adolfo Colindres, who netted the ball in.

Three successful headers were enough for Jalapa to play another season in the Liga Nacional. In the end, a 3-1 win and a 4-3 win in aggregate.
