Group Stage

Group A

Flamengo, Independiente del Valle, Junior, Winner G1

  • Flamengo and Independiente del Valle are the two winners of last season’s Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana

  • The only Copa Libertadores’ previous meeting between the group’s teams was in 1984 when Flamengo and Junior played in the same group. Flamengo won both matches.

Group B

Palmeiras, Bolívar, Tigre, Winner G2

  • The only previous meeting between Palmeiras and Bolívar at the Copa Libertadores was in 1995. The teams played each other in the round of 16, Palmeiras won 3:1.

  • In its only previous Copa Libertadores appearance, back in 2013, Tigre has also played in the group stage against Palmeiras. They won 1-0 at home but lost 2-0 in Brazil.

Group C

Peñarol, Colo-Colo, Athletico Paranaense, Jorge Wilstermann

  • Colo-Colo didn’t play a Copa Libertadores match against an Uruguayan team since 1997. Back then, they have defeated Club Nacional in the round of 16.

  • Athletico Paranense has played only once against a team from Uruguay in the Copa Libertadores. It was against Nacional in 2000.

  • Athletico Paranense and Jorge Wilstermann were drawn together in last year’s Copa Libertadores. The Brazilian team won 4-0 at home and lost 3-2 in Bolivia.

Group D

River Plate, São Paulo, LDU Quito, Binacional

  • Binacional from Peru is making its debut Copa Libertadores appearance.

  • The other three teams won eight Copa Libertadores titles - River Plate won four times, São Paulo won three times and LDU Quito won once.

Group E

Grêmio, Universidad Católica, América de Cali, Winner G4

  • Grêmio and Universidad Católica are being drawn to the same group for the second year in a row. Last year, each side has won its home match.

  • Grêmio has defeated América de Cali in the semifinal group during the journey to their first Copa Libertadores title in 1983.

Group F

Nacional, Racing Club, Alianza Lima, Estudiantes de Mérida

  • Nacional and Racing Club have played in the 1967 Copa Libertadores final. After two goalless draws, Racing Club won 2-1 in the decisive match and won their first and only title.

  • It’s the first time since 1999 that Estudiantes de Mérida is playing in the Copa Libertadores group stage. In their last appearance, they played against Nacional, won at home 3-1 and were beaten 2-1 in Montevideo.

Group G

Olimpia, Santos, Delfín, Defensa y Justicia

  • Defensa y Justicia from Argentina is making its debut Copa Libertadores appearance.

  • Delfín have already played in continental competitions. but they never played against Argentine or Brazilian teams before.

  • Santos’ previous matches against a Paraguayan side were in the 2011 Copa Libertadores semifinals. They knocked out Cerro Porteño, before winning the final against Peñarol

Group H

Boca Juniors, Libertad, Caracas, Winner G3

  • Boca Juniors and Libertad faced each other on three occasions. The first was in the 1977 Copa Libertadores, and later Boca won the title. The second was in 2008 Copa Libertadores, and Boca won the title again. The last time was in 2018, and this time Boca reached the final but lost against River Plate.
